Backup Images and videos on Google Photos

Store photos on your device, camera or storage card in your Google Photos library.

What you need to back up photos and videos

Good internet connection

File sizes that can be backed up. Your files will not be backed up if they are:

  1. Photos over 75 MB or 100MP
  2. Videos over 10 GB.
  3. Items are smaller than 256 x 256.

Types of files that can be backed up.

  1. Photos: .jpg, .png, .webp and some RAW files.
  2. Live photos can be backed up if you use the Google Photos app on your iPhone or iPad.
  3. Videos: .mpg, .mod, .mmv, .tod, .wmv, .asf, .avi, .divx, .mov, .m4v, .3gp, .3g2, .mp4, .m2t, .m2ts, .mts, and .mkv files.

Important Note: If you try to back up a file type that is not listed, it may not work with Google Photos.

Backup your Images and Videos on Computer from Google Photos

There are 2 ways to backup your phone, camera or storage card from your computer: - 

  1. Install backup and synchronization.
  2. Upload photos from your browser.

Configure the desktop backup and synchronization application

  1. On your computer, download and install Backup and sync.
  2. Sign in to the Google account you use for Google Photos.
  3. Select to back up only photos or videos, or all files.
  4. Select the folders you want to copy.
  5. Under "Photo and video upload size", select the upload size.
  6. Click Start

Important Notes: - 

  1. If you delete a photo or video from your computer, it will remain in Google Photos.
  2. If you delete a photo or video from Google Photos, it will not be deleted from Google Drive or your computer.

If you already have Backup and Sync for Drive

If you have problems installing Backup and Synchronization, you may already have it installed on Google Drive.

To enable Backup and sync for Google Photos:

  1. On your computer, open Backup and sync Backup and sync.
  2. Click More More and then Preferences.
  3. Activate Upload newly added photos and videos to Google Photos.

If you had the desktop photo charger: after you have installed Backup and Synchronization, you can replace the photo charger by uninstalling it.

Upload files to Google Photos from your browser

  1. On your computer, open photos.google.com
  2. In the upper right, click Upload and then Computer.
  3. Find and select your photos.
  4. Click on Open.

You can also drag photos from your computer to the album to upload them to Google Photos. If you drag a photo to a specific album, the photo will be uploaded to that album.

What are backup and synchronization?

  1. A backup service: your photos and videos will be saved in your Google Photos library.
  2. Stored privately: photos and videos backed up from your device are private unless you share them.
  3. Synchronization: Any changes you make will be reflected in each synchronized device. For example, if you edit and save a photo on your phone, it will look the same on photos.google.com.

Activate and synchronize again

Before you start, make sure you are logged in.

  1. On your Android phone/tablet and iPhone/iPad, open the Google Photos application.
  2. Sign in to your Google account.
  3. At the top, touch Menu Menu.
  4. Select Settings and then Backup and sync.
  5. Press "Backup and sync" on or off.

If you have run out of storage, scroll down and tap Disable backup.

Things to keep in mind about this setting:

Changing the backup settings will affect all applications that use Backup and sync, such as Google Drive.

If you have Backup and Sync enabled, deleting the Google Photos application from your device will not be disabled. To disable Backup and Synchronization, follow the instructions above.

Change your backup settings

  1. Choose the Google account to back up photos and videos: under "Backup account", tap the account name.
  2. Change the size of your load: press Load size. Learn more about load sizes.
  3. Backup of device folders: Press Backup of device folders and select the folders you want to back up.
  4. Mobile data backup: If you do not want to wait for Wi-Fi to back up your photos, under "Cellular data backup", touch Photos or Videos. Charges from your service provider may apply if you charge using your mobile network.
  5. Roaming backup: under "When to make a backup", tap Roaming.

Check if your photos are backed up

  1. On your Android phone/tablet and iPhone/iPad, open the Google Photos application.
  2. Sign in to your Google account.
  3. Touch Photos Photos.
  4. At the top, you'll see if your photos have a backup, or if you're still waiting for a backup.
