Find missing emails in Yahoo Mail

It is frustrating when you cannot find the email you are looking for in your inbox. These are the main reasons why your email can be difficult to find and suggestions on how to handle each one.

Emails are in an unexpected folder

Email filters and our spam filter can send incoming emails to different folders to your Inbox.

  • Search for them: locate lost emails using our basic or advanced search options.
  • Spam and Trash: these folders are not displayed in search results. Check them manually.
  • Filters: check your settings to see if the filters send emails to another folder.

Emails were deleted by an application

If you access Yahoo Mail from an application on your mobile device or on your computer, your settings or actions could have caused emails to be deleted from your account.

Applications that use IMAP and Yahoo Mail applications.

Some desktop email applications and most mobile email applications, such as on iPhone and Android, use IMAP.

  1. The actions taken in these applications are reflected in your Yahoo mail account everywhere.
  2. The email deleted from the applications will be placed in the Trash folder.
  3. Deleting the email from the Trash removes it from your account.

Applications that use POP

Desktop applications, such as Outlook, Thunderbird and Mac Mail, can access Yahoo Mail using POP.

  1. Copies of your email download to the application, so the actions in the application will not affect your account.
  2. However, a POP configuration will delete the email from your account when it is downloaded.
  3. To disable the "delete emails from server" option, contact the manufacturer of your application.
