Before starting with the creation of a Snapchat geofilter, we will provide you with basic information about Snapchat filters. First, we will cover the basics, such as what is a Snapchat geofilter, why you may want one and more.
First things first, what exactly is a Snapchat geofilter?
As a reminder, a Snapchat filter is a design that you can superimpose on a Snapchat picture you take.
With that, a geofilter is like a normal Snapchat filter, except that it is geographically based. That means that a geofilter is only available at a particular designated location. Users can add these Snapchat geofilters to any photo they take. Often, I see them added to the Snapchat stories.
These geofilters, which were originally only available through an application process controlled by Snapchat, were opened to the general public in 2015. From then on, anyone could create and upload a custom Snapchat filter in an area of their choice. . While there is still a short approval process, these filters are, in general, profitable and widely available.
And when I say widely available, I want to say very widely available. Since 2015, Snapchat geofilters have lost popularity. Do you want a test?
You’ll notice that all the previous Snapchat geofilters reflect the particular neighborhood I’m in, it’s a fairly common use case. Almost all neighborhoods in Chicago have a variety of unique geofilters.
Sponsored geofilters are custom overlays that can be applied to private photos and videos sent by Snapchat users. They can target specific areas (such as proximity to stores) or they can be in large areas.
Sponsored filters are mostly used by big brands, as they can be quite expensive.
Geofilters on-demand is similar to sponsored geofilters, but are much more affordable and are used in very small, localized areas. These filters can cost as little as $ 5 per hour and are perfect for small business conferences, weddings, birthday parties or events.
Now that we know what a Snapchat geofilter is, and we’ve seen some examples, let’s talk about why.
So, now that you know what a Snapchat geofilter is, the question arises: why?
The simple answer is the following. He will put his message, whatever it is, in front of many people.
For example, think of all the geofilters I see, only on a typical workday. Of course, I live in Chicago (so there are probably more geofilters than, say, a rural place), but Snapchat geofilters are usually plentiful.
And believe it or not, these are just scraping the surface! You will notice that the previous geofilters are based mainly on my location. However, they are increasingly popular among bars, public attractions (think of museums, landmarks), restaurants and businesses (can you really call yourself a tech startup if you do not have a custom geofilter that covers your office?).
In addition, since the Snapchat geofilters have been opened to the general public, they have become a staple in weddings, family reunions, university sporting events and, basically, an event in which a large number of people can expect.
The point is that nobody has to look for a geofilter. As long as you are in a particular location (and have your phone’s location services enabled), it will immediately appear in your Snapchat application.
Needless to say, it’s a stellar opportunity for social media marketing, especially if you’re looking to use Snapchat for business. They are a simple way to get attention, economic and, what is more important, to put your brand in the public eye. Almost more important is that we know that consumers love them. Well, maybe I’m looking at the small sample size of my Snapchat friends, but it’s a rare moment that I get a Snapchat without an attached geofilter.
If you are preparing to create your own Snapchat geofilter, but first you want to get inspired, here you can see how you can see the available geofilters.
Seeing available Snapchat geofilters is easy, but first, you must make sure that your phone’s location services are activated.

Once your location services are enabled, open your Snapchat application and take a photo. From there, simply slide your finger to the left or to the right to see the available geofilters.
